Kuwait Condemns Houthi Allegations Against Saudi Arabia and Threats to Maritime Navigation

The State of Kuwait has officially issued a strong condemnation of recent statements made by the Houthi movement targeting Saudi Arabia. The diplomatic response comes as regional tensions continue to rise following the Houthis' sudden declaration of a maritime blockade against the Kingdom.

Here is a breakdown of Kuwait's official stance and what it means for Gulf security:

1. Rejecting False Allegations

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the statements issued by the Houthis against Saudi Arabia, officially describing the claims as completely unfounded. Kuwait made it clear that it stands in full solidarity with the Kingdom, backing all measures taken by Riyadh to protect its national security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

2. Defending Maritime Freedom

In addition to defending Saudi Arabia, Kuwait vehemently rejected the Houthis' threats directed at maritime navigation in the Red Sea. The ministry stressed that ensuring the freedom of navigation through international waterways remains a fundamental principle of international law, which is strictly guaranteed under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

3. Call for International Action

Highlighting the severity of the maritime threats, Kuwait called on the broader international community to step in and ensure the enforcement of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions. The ministry specifically pointed to Resolution 2216 concerning Yemen, as well as Resolution 2722, which explicitly affirms the need to protect commercial shipping and navigation in the Red Sea. Furthermore, Kuwait reiterated that the security of Saudi Arabia is inherently inseparable from the security of Kuwait and the entire Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

The Bottom Line:

Kuwait’s swift diplomatic response highlights a unified Gulf front, signaling that regional allies will not tolerate threats to sovereign security or disruptions to vital international trade corridors.
